TSB 33 01 85 (975) P: Differential - Final Drive Oil Capacity
Details
85bmw01 GROUP 33 Rear Axle Bulletin Number 33 01 85 (975) Page 1 of 2 Montvale, NJ January, 1985 Technical Dept. This Service Information Bulletin spells out the word liters in place of the abbreviation 1 and designates the appropriate final drive cases as "small", "medium" and "large". This bulletin supersedes S.I. 33 20 84 (862) which should be removed from your S.I. binder and discarded. SUBJECT: Final Drive Oil Capacity MODELS: All The pre-delivery inspection no longer calls for checking the final drive oil level. The following capacities of oil are specified for filling the final drive in all BMW models. "small" final drive case - 0.9/1.3* liters "medium" final drive case - 1.7 liters "large" final drive case - 1.9 liters The initial filling of 1.3 liters in "3" series (E 30) models is necessary because of greater oil consumption (approx. 0.4 liter) during the running-in phase. Consequently, the oil level must not be lowered before the running-in inspection at 1200 mi. (2000 km). When replacing the final drive oil for the first time at the running-in inspection, add oil to the E 30 models until it runs out of the filler opening. Note: 1.3 liters must be poured into an exchange final drive for E 30 cars prior to installation! Only use final drive oil approved in Service Information 00 04 84 (890) for the initial filling of new and exchange final drives as well as for scheduled oil changes. Also note that different oil is required for "limited slip" differentials!
